“Boo-tique” pinball makers Spooky Pinball are at it again and this time they’ve taken on a beloved classic cartoon that generally had a spooky theme to it, Scooby-Doo!. This is not based upon any of the new stuff that has been churned out of Warner’s current content factory, but the classic 1969-70 cartoon that most would associate the brand with. Here’s the official reveal trailer, although it doesn’t specify which edition it is, whereas on the Facebook page for Spooky it talks about there being three; I would guess this is showing the full-featured CE model:
If you are skipping watching that for the moment, here are the general features…the most interesting one to me would be something that perhaps has existed before but I don’t recall seeing, “dual apron locks” which are pretty cool. Here’s a cap of all the features. It also features the voice talents of Frank Welker, Mathew Lillard, Kate Micucci, and Grey Griffin, all of which have been involved in voice acting in Scooby-Doo at one time or another (Frank being in the original as Fred).
As mentioned that there are three editions, these are: Standard($7769), Blood Sucker Edition ($8796) and Collectors Edition ($9769).
The game will be limited to 1969 units and orders will open up on Friday at 10AM CST.
Overall it looks like it’s fun but you never know without playing it. From a collector’s perspective I could see this as being a hot item – I also was given the “Shaggy” nickname in high school as I looked like the character, particularly when I had a goatee (I never had a Great Dane though, lol). From an operator’s, I’m just not crazy about any pin at these prices because no matter what it is, the game takes several years to pay itself off. This does seem to be more interesting and a better playfield design than 007 Bond though, so I’ll give them that (if I was considering buying a pin for my location at the moment, I’d go for SD over 007).
On a different note but speaking of those voice talents, I’d really like to see Spooky go back to making a Mystery Science Theater 3000 pin – they had been designing one some years ago but it was early on before Spooky hit it big and things couldn’t work out. I know that Trace Beaulieu (the original Dr. Forrester and 1st voice of Crow T. Robot) was willing to do that and I imagine he still would be – I wouldn’t be surprised if the guys currently doing Rifftrax or MST3k (like Joel Hodgson) wouldn’t mind either.
Anyways, what do you think about this one?
