H/T To Kamen-Rider Ex-Aid for the tip
News has been rather quiet when it comes to Bandai Namco Amusements, but today an update to the beloved, and arcade exclusive, racing series Wangan Midnight Maximum Tune was announced, so let’s dive into that from what we can.
First off, the announcement for WMMT 6RR only covers Japan and “Asia/Oceania.”
If you don’t know what that means, it’s a sales territory that covers southeast Asian countries as well as Australia. One of those SE Asia countries where WMMT has a huge following is Malaysia, so this means they’ll be able to enjoy the update there. These Oceania versions are always in English, but the cabinet uses the same design as what they enjoy in Japan.
The new update features some new Nissan vehicles, such as the rare GT-R50 by Italdesign, along with the SKYLINE 2000 GT-R and the SILVIA K’s AERO. I have to imagine that it’ll have more than just a few vehicles thrown in, but that’s all that was revealed today, so we’ll have to wait and see.
I have reached out to Bandai Namco Amusements America for comment, but as of press time, I had not heard back from them. Given the history, however, if this was intended to launch for Western markets this Winter, then it would have been included in today’s announcement.
Does that mean no WMMT6 for the West? Not necessarily, but chances are pretty slim. With the game continuing development, I wouldn’t be surprised if Namco decides to have #7 launch here instead, which means they’re skipping even-numbered MaxiTunes for the West (although Europe hasn’t had one since 3). Whichever version lands here next though, I really, really would hope for a conversion kit to switch over existing MT5 cabs to that, instead of having to buy a whole new cab.
